Monday Racing – an Introduction to Racing for Cruisers and Shorthanded Racing
Monday Racing is intended to nurture the enjoyment of good boat handling and sail trim that develops through racing. All divisions are main and jib.
- Fleet wants cruisers to try racing in a low stress and helpful cruising fleet start.
- Fleet wants racing skippers to teach spouses, family or PCYC crew members how to helm the boat.
- Fleet wants to promote shorthanded racing for our more experienced racers.
Monday Cruising Fleet – give racing and helming a try in the first start
Monday evenings begin with a start for the Cruising Fleet. The cruising divisions are for people that have never helmed a boat in competitive racing such as Wednesday and Thursday racing at PCYC. You do not need to have a PHRF certificate and most of the boats race with furling head sails and Dacron sails. Some boats even leave the flower pots on the stern rail. Most important, we want to encourage cruising skippers to try racing and we want to encourage the spouses and families of PCYC boats that race on Wednesdays and have never helmed before in races to helm their boat around a race course. We hope this will encourage more families from race boats at the club to enjoy some of PCYC Fleet’s on-the-water fun. The club seeks to nurture another generation of keelboat racers through its Monday Cruising Fleet. As with last season, we will be asking for seasoned race skippers to assist in mentoring the cruisers on start sequence techniques and maximizing trim and boat speed. Race Committee makes every effort to talk the cruising fleet through its start sequence over the VHF radio.
Monday Double-handed and Single-handed Racing - Starts Two and Three
The second and third starts on Mondays are for building the tradition of short-handed racing that PCYC has developed on the Lake. We want to give more PCYC boats an opportunity to learn short-handed racing and participate in the Lake Ontario Short Handed Racing Series (“LOSHRS”). These are the starts for regular club racers that want to see just how good they are without all the extra help and brawn. Many experienced cruisers may find this racing format enjoyable and not unlike cruising where one or two people do all the work. There will be separate single handed and double handed starts. Racing skippers and a crew member can prove their versatility and practice their abilities at making the boat go with little or no crew.
Woman-on-the-Helm Prizes and Scoring
We want to encourage more women to race with peers. The 2005 season saw the introduction of the extremely popular woman-on-the-helm idea which has encouraged greater numbers of women members to try driving the boat on a race course. An additional set of prizes and scores are produced comparing the performance among the women on the helm in all three Monday Fleets.
